How Does Reiki Work?

At the 'physical level', Reiki is understood to work with and through one's 'energy system'. For the purposes of simplicity and brevity and also at the risk of losing some helpful context, one's energy system may be summarized using the following components:

  1. Seven major chakras – (namely Root chakra, Sacral chakra, Solar Plexus chakra, Heart chakra, Throat chakra, Third-eye or Brow chakra, and Crown chakra).

    • Each chakra has its own color e.g. Root = Red, Sacral = Orange, Solar Plexus = Yellow, Heart = Green, Throat = Light Blue, Third-eye = Dark Blue or Indigo, and Crown = Purple.

    • Additionally, each chakra has its own symbol, mantra, sound frequency, musical note, element, crystal/stone, essential oil, related gland, a specific nerve plexus, etc.

  2. Seven nerve plexuses related to each chakra, respectively from the Root Chakra to the Crown Chakra, are Sacral-coccygeal Plexus, Sacral Plexus, Solar Plexus, Heart Plexus, Cervical Ganglia Medulla Plexus, Hypothalamus Pituitary Plexus, and Cerebral Cortex Pineal Plexus.

  3. Seven glands of the endocrine system (namely Gonads, Adrenal, Pancreas, Thymus, Thyroid, Pituitary, and Pineal).

  4. Seven auric layers or energetic bodies – (namely Etheric, Emotional, Mental, Astral, Etheric Template, Celestial, and Ketheric Template or Causal).

    • Each “aura”, in its healthiest state, has its own color. It may change in the real time reflecting one's state of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being and the types, extent, and locations of the energy blockages in these auras and other energy system components in this list.

  5. Twelve Principal Meridians (originated from the Traditional Chines Medicine or TCM) – 6 in arms and 6 in legs. The meridians are the vessels to flow the energy in our energy system akin to the arteries and veins in our body that carry the blood flow in our physical body.

To begin with, Reiki (i.e. the universal or cosmic life force energy), when invoked by a practitioner, enters into the practitioner's body - first through various auras and then passing through the chakras - and then primarily from the practitioner's palms into the recipient's 'energy system' - first through his/her auras (from outermost to the innermost auric body) and then into the chakras. The practitioner then opens, unblocks, cleanses, and/or balances the chakras as needed (e. g. for the purpose of initiation and attunement to learn Reiki and become a Reiki 'channel', or, treating a specific ailment, disease, condition, well-being needs, etc.) to optimize the flow of the lifeforce energy into and through these chakras.

As mentioned above, the chakras are interconnected with the remaining components of the energy system and therefore, from the chakras, through the meridians, the optimized life force energy flows into the corresponding endocrine glands and nerve centers or plexuses. Since the endocrine glands are responsible for key hormones of the body which in turn affect our major biological processes and their outcomes, and now that those glands already have an optimized lifeforce energy flow, those hormones' production, quality, and interactions/processing are also improved and more balanced, in turn positively influencing the bodily processes (and even functions), thus contributing to improved health, be it overall or for a specific structure, organ, or part of the body.
